Following an open house from 5 o’clock to 7 today, community residents are invited to a meeting from 7 to 9 this evening at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center, 4718 W. Washington Blvd., Los Angeles, to discuss a healthier South L.A. for the next 30 years.

The City of Los Angeles is quickly finalizing the plan that will guide future development and determine access to healthier foods, parks and open space, public transportation, pedestrian hubs, and bike lanes for the West Adams-Baldwin Hills-Leimert Park community for the next 20 to 30 years.

Bounded roughly by Pico and Venice boulevards to the north, the City of Inglewood to the south, Arlington and Van Ness avenues to the east, and as far as Robertson Boulevard/Culver City to the west, this Community Plan Area is one of three within the city’s South Los Angeles Planning Region. What is ultimately decided here will also impact the surrounding communities.

While the revised Community Plan Update includes many provisions that will enhance the quality of life for South L.A. residents, it falls short in addressing fast food density, prioritizing the development of new park space, enforcing efforts to make the community more pedestrian, transit and bike-friendly, and establishing safeguards to protect the character of our communities. A coalition of 20 South L.A. community-based organizations has already called on the city for greater protection of health and equity in the plan.

Residents will have an opportunity tonight to comment on the plan and voice their concerns at this public hearing.
