My mother’s eyes welled with tears as my brother pointed and exclaimed, “Look, mommy, it’s a tree!”
He was three years old, and he had just first gotten his first pair of glasses. With those glasses, he had just seen his first real tree.
Thankfully, what the doctors had feared was some sort of mental handicap was nothing more than poor vision.
Photography Taken to a New Level
I think of this story often as I learn something that allows me to see and experience a particular aspect of my life at a new level.
Lately, I have been reflecting on my incredible fortune at having met two photographers who have changed the way I look at images of myself — and of the world.
I used to think a good photo was one in which my eyes weren’t squinty and I didn’t have a dorky smile.
After working with Manny in the studio and seeing Eric’s live shots of my performances, I am no longer such an easy sell.
These two men are more than photographers. They are artists who choose a camera as a paintbrush. They tell stories that defy even tens of thousands of words. They capture the essence behind (or underneath?) the physical form.
They have challenged and encouraged me to see my art in a whole new light. For this I am forever thankful.
