Preventing Diabetes Is the Topic for ‘Walk with a Doc’

When the monthly Walk with a Doc program, teaming with the Culver Palms YMCA, returns on Saturday morning at Vets Park, the 8:45 agenda will feature diabetes prevention information.

While the walk starts at 9, stretching and warmup led by Brandon Webb, the YMCA’s Healthy Lifestyles counselor, will precede the talk at 8:40.

As we know, diabetes can be treated. With prompt detection, it can be prevented, reversed and complications avoided. 

Walk with a Doc-Culver City, in coordination with the Los Angeles  County Medical Assn. and the YMCA of metropolitan Los Angeles will explain how this is possible.
An estimated one in three adults in the United States has pre-diabetes, 79 million people.

Yet just 11 percent of them know they have it. 

Having pre-diabetes means a person has elevated blood glucose levels that are not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. People with pre-diabetes are at risk for not only developing Type 2 diabetes, but cardiovascular disease and other chronic conditions. 

A pre-diabetes diagnosis does not mean developing Type 2 diabetes is inevitable, yet it should serve as a final wake-up call to improve health. To help adults make lifestyle changes, the Culver Palms Family YMCA is offering the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program (http://www.ymcala.org/metro/classes/diabetes-prevention-program)
based on the National Institutes of Health-led, CDC-supported study that showed how eating better and increasing physical activity led to better health and the reduction of new Type 2 cases.

The YMCA’s year-long program consists of 16 one-hour weekly classroom sessions, then eight monthly sessions. A trained lifestyle coach helps participants learn strategies for healthy eating, physical activity and other lifestyle changes.  Session topics include:

•  Ways to Eat Less
•  Four Keys to Healthy Eating Out
•  Ways to Stay Motivated
•  You Can Manage Stress
•  Make Social Cues Work for You
•  Problem Solving
•  Being Active: A Way of Life

Next class starts in January.
