Re “Talking Self-Determination in the Middle of Kwanzaa”

I am coordinating the Urban Chefs Academy, a new program from Black Women for Wellness's Kitchen Divas Team.

We work with youth in the schools surrounding our office, 4340 11th Ave., Los Angeles 90008. As we launched the program this year, we experienced ujamaa.

Ujamaa is the fourth principle of Kwanzaa, which started last Friday and ends Thursday. It stands for collective work and responsibility.

As a team, we visited Audubon Middle School, Barack Obama Middle School, Washington High School and Crenshaw High School.

Our objectives: Reaching out to students, building relationships with faculty and staff, engaging with parents and students. All of this is with the intent to implement our Urban Chef Academy as an after-school program. This program is truly collective work and responsibility.

Our collective includes Community Health Councils (http://www.chc-inc.org/), Brotherhood Crusades (http://www.brotherhoodcrusade.org/), Challengers Boys and Girls Club (http://www.cbgcla.org/), Anani Cultural Healing Arts Center (http://ananiculturalhealingartscenter.org/), and more, all working together to uplift African American and black youth in our community, expanding our horizons surrounding the food industry.
Practice ujamaa today. Add to the prosperity of the Urban Chefs Academy by:
