Readers may know that my husband Charley is a rocket scientist and aerospace engineer. After retiring, he began teaching rocket engineers at CSULB and now at my campus, CSULA.
His team of mechanical and electrical engineering students has designed and currently are building an experimental sounding rocket will be launched at an Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition in Utah in June.
You probably can guess that I also write poems about rockets, as in the one below from 2011 for the sixth annual Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition…!
It Was A Blast!
We came to launch our rockets way up into the sky.
They all went up and then came down and we wondered why
Some were intact, but others broke into little pieces
That had to be collected, carefully, with tweezers.
And then there was the rocket that was built to perfection
It launched just fine, then changed its course
And went the wrong direction
But our intrepid engineers from many different schools
Know how to solve the problems for they have all the tools,
The knowledge and the training to fix just what went wrong.
And the data they take with them can only make them strong
As they return to campus, for they came from far and near
From Canada and Brazil; maybe Turkey will make it next year
From Florida and Nebraska and states throughout the West
Arizona, Washington and California, teams that are the best
We hope they all will come again to next year’s rendition
Of the International Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition
