My eyes popped open at 4:30 again this morning, brain still adding countermelodies to the new song I had started before falling asleep.

I don’t know who came up with the stereotype of artists as being decadent and lazy.

But it sure doesn’t apply to me lately.

I think back to when I was under the spell of the direct deposit that accompanied my corporate IT gig, splurging on massages, fine dining and sleeping late on weekends.

These days I am working harder than ever… without a steady paycheck. I haven’t needed an alarm for weeks. I substitute massage with ice packs and a vigorous yoga routine. And I prepare nearly all my meals.

I am on a mission.

With 18 days until my upcoming CD release concert, on Saturday, July 25, all my sights (and nearly all my thoughts) are laser-focused on this target.

I do not know whether this is passion or obsession – or if there is a difference.

What I do know is that I feel more alive and fulfilled at this moment, in the uncertainty of wondering whether people will actually show up to experience my performance  — never mind imagining what they will think of my music — than I ever did when I was happily on track with my retirement plan.

Ms. Dewberry, an accomplished cellist, completed her DMA in Chamber Music Performance from UCLA in December 2005. She received her MM in Cello Performance from UCLA in June 2002 and her B.M. in Cello Performance from Western Michigan University in April 1998. She also holds a B.A. in French with a minor in Women's Studies and Philosophy.

On Saturday, July 25, at 8 o’clock, Ms. Dewberry will star in the program “Origins,” at the Yost Theater, Santa Ana, featuring cello, silent film, dance and electronics. The show, spotlighting musicians from The Definiens Project, celebrates the release of her new album, also “Origins.”
