Have you gone out of your way for another?  Have you done something because you felt you MUST DO something back?

You most likely have.

The other person did something or said something that pleased you so much you decided you MUST do something back.

I'm not talking about exchanging gifts.  In this case, one is almost expected to return the favor.

I'm talking about situations in which many people, although they might FEEL LIKE going out of their way to do something, decided NOT to do that something.  Perhaps the FEEL LIKES felt it was too much of an effort to go out of their way to bring some flowers, a gift, a card.

If you are not a FEEL LIKE, then you may be a MUST DO sort of individual.

Why are some people MUST DO people? I'll tell you at the end of this paper.

Here's a real-life scenario:

You have your car in the body shop. You owe a $500 deductible. The body shop makes an error. Perhaps they tell you on the phone that you do not owe any deductible.  Then they call you back — after you've celebrated with your wife — to tell you, “Sorry, you DO owe that deductible.”

When you go to pick up your car, the shop owner says, “Because we made a mistake, we are waiving the deductible.”  You thank him somewhat profusely, and leave with your car.  You get home and think — WOW! That owner was great. He really didn't have to waive my deductible.  I ought to do something for him. Or for the shop.

STOP HERE AND PONDER:

    (1) Do I just forget it, and remain thankful forever?

    (2) Do I just call the shop and say “Thank you very much!!”

    (3) Do I ACTUALLY go out of my way, buy something and bring it to the shop?

I chose No. (3).  I felt I could do no less.  I was saved a great deal of money. To me, that was a fairly easy decision.

But what if no savings of money was involved, just that people went out of their way to do something for you.  Would you return the favor and go out of your way for them?

If your FEEL-LIKE-doing-it feelings are overwhelmed by your MUST DO urge, you should act on it…and DO IT.

So, why are some people MUST DO people?

Simply because they REALIZE that they want to be TRUE to their feelings and, if the MUST DO urge outweighs the FEEL LIKE urge, they remain true, and DO IT.
