The pleasant salesman in the appliance department at Sears looked at the LED lights that came on when the Samsung refrigerator’s French doors were opened. “I think those lights can be turned off,” he said. We hoped so because we liked the refrigerator and because we needed the lights to go off when we opened the doors on the Sabbath.
The next day we had our new refrigerator. The Samsung rep answered my phone call: “No, there is no way we can turn off those LED lights.” The refrigerator had to be returned. My wife and I were saddened.
Now, I have researched hundreds of topics on Google but I didn’t think of researching this problem until a friend of my wife’s suggested I do so. And there it was staring me in the face: a guy on the Web named Noam said that two magnets placed on the tops of the French doors would trick the refrigerator into thinking its doors were closed.
It was about 8 p.m. I called Home Depot. Yes, they had magnets – two nice strong ones in a pack for $2.19. I was there and home in 30 minutes, and in another minute the miracle happened. I strategically placed the two magnets on top of the open French doors, and VOILA! The lights stayed off. I felt like Moses splitting the Red Sea. The two placed magnets on top of the open French doors had “told” the magnets in the doors that they had made good contact, that the doors were closed and that the lights did not have to go on. I love it. A small piece of packing tape covering the push button switch on the bottom freezer door, and the miracle was complete: there were no lights coming from the open French doors or from the open freezer.
I just had to call that salesman at his home. After excitedly telling him the whole story, I agreed to be his contact for anyone else with the need for weekly refrigerator darkness. His Samsung French door refrigerators would now be available to more of his customers. I think I’ll bring him a present of a pack of those magnets since I bought several packs, not knowing how many I would need.
Hey, maybe I should do a search online to discover if there’s an easy way to fix that leak from under our sink when the dishwasher does its water ejection thing back into the sink. Now that would be more like a Moses water miracle.
