[Editor’s Note: Dr. Hoult’s husband, Charlie, is a rocket scientist, and here is a rhythmic account of how they spent last evening.]

We have been watching Mars the past few nights as it moves across the sky. This evening we noticed it hovering above the moon.

I penned these lines watching the lunar eclipse.

Mars and the Blood Moon

Do you see Mars
over there
peeking at the Moon
as if
he didn’t care…
yet watching to see
if she would show herself
to be as bloody as he?

Mars has lurked for days
in the night sky
looking at the Moon.
Need we wonder why?
The warrior looks for blood
To win, means some must die…

Mars, be advised
to keep your distance
or you will meet
with great resistance.
We wish our Moon’s beams
to light the night
with silver streams
that bring delight…
