Dateline Boston — I am a multitasker. At the moment, I am cleaning the house, listening to music, sending and receiving emails and texts, eating, checking Facebook, and writing. In a minute I may turn on the TV. I want to vacuum (where did the spelling of vacuum come from, I wonder?), but my cat is sleeping and I don’t want to wake her up. Never mind the fact that she doesn’t ever hesitate to wake me up when I’m sleeping; I still won’t disturb her.
They say women are more skilled than men at doing lots of things simultaneously. Even thinking. My boyfriend and I were having a discussion recently about a big decision. He said he needed time to really sit and think about it. He does his best thinking while driving or running. Well, most of the time when he’s driving, he’s talking to me (hands free, of course), so that cuts his thinking time to three times a week.
I got what he was saying, but I didn’t understand it. I think twenty-four hours a day, three hundred and sixty-five days a year. I can’t imagine setting aside time to think. I might set aside time to go through the pile of papers next to the armchair, or write a bunch of thank-you notes. But set aside a time to think? Unheard of.
Needless to say, I had been thinking about the aforementioned decision for about four months. So I was all set with my reasoning, pros and cons. I’m now thinking about things that will happen two, four and six months from now. Poor Boyfriend will have to run to catch up.
