Why Should We Pay? Everyone Should Be Outraged by the 4043 Irving Agreement

I am shocked that Tuesday’s article about the Downtown Neighborhood Assn. (“Accord May Be Breaking Out Between Neighbors and Builders of 4043 Irving.” Keywords: Clinton Goldsmith.) was not titled “Citizens of Culver City Will Be Asked to Pay Money to Private Developer for Next Door Neighbor Concessions.”

Everyone in the city should be outraged by this supposed win-win.

Up until now, we have been content to shake our heads at the foolishness of the Redevelopment Agency each time they sell valuable city land for a song to private developers.

Up until now — including the latest enormous ReThink Development project — the city has been content to brush residents’ valid complaints aside.

In this case – we are entering dangerous waters. Because the neighbors wisely hired a lawyer and a mediator, the developer will win either way. Maybe the neighbors closest to that project will win. But the city will be poor. How will it make up that difference ?

Why are all of us being asked to pay a developer for an Agency’s mistake under the veiled threat of litigation by a small group of homeowners?

Maybe the title of the article should have been “City Sinks to New Low.
