Re “He Calls Her ‘Entitlement Nan’” 0and “A Salute to Paspalis — However, the ‘$20,000’ Candidate Goal Is Troubling”
Here’s Johnnie! Again, with yet another misguided comment.
To letter-writer Johnnie Hartfield:
I am amazed that you took exception to Nancy Goldberg’s qualifications for School Board.
Yes, Johnnie, it is a natural transition for someone who has been a leader in education, has taught AP classes for the majority of her career, who is so highly thought of by the College Board that they invite her to train other teachers and read AP exam essays every year, who has mentored other CCUSD teachers, who has created curriculum for her department, who has written thousand of recommendation letters for our students that have helped them get into fine colleges and universities.
Where was your indignation when our new Superintendent was hired? Her 40 years with the District continually was touted as the very reason she was qualified to be our Superintendent…because she knew our District so well that she was the “obvious” choice.
Now you have an issue with Nancy Goldberg’s 41 years of service to this District and community being adequate preparation for her to serve on the board?
You don’t think that her service to thousands of students during her career and her knowledge of the inner workings of CCUSD make her qualified to serve on a Board that makes decisions regarding the education of our students?
Where is your indignation about the qualifications, or lack thereof, of the other candidates in this race?
Does being a parent of a child in the District automatically make you qualified?
Does being an attorney automatically make you qualified?
Does being involved in PTA automatically make you qualified?
Does being a teacher automatically make you qualified?
Only if you are as exceptional a teacher as Mrs. Goldberg was during her long and exemplary career.
Just what is your criteria for deciding that someone is qualified to be a member of the School Board?
As far as your taking exception to the $20,000 “donation goal,” that was a figure thrown out at Mrs. Goldberg’s kickoff event (I was actually there to hear the comment—were you?).
I didn’t consider it a stated “goal.”
Yet with so many people in attendance, I’m sure it was open to many interpretations. However, the comment was based on what previous candidates had said was necessary to run an effective campaign.
It is unfortunate that it was reported as an absolute, set goal of the campaign committee, but that was never something the candidate felt was the goal of her campaign.
Maybe if you actually spoke to Mrs. Goldberg, instead of just throwing garbage against the wall to see what sticks, you would have a clear idea of her qualifications and what she stands for.
My definition of “chutzpah” is to take cheap shots without checking your facts first.
P.S. And, yes, our association does, indeed, support Mrs. Goldberg’s candidacy for School Board.

My father always wanted a boy, but the Lord blessed him with a girl. That didn't stop him from naming me Johnnie.
I've gotten used to being referred to as a male for a long time. So it's no big deal.
No harm, no foul.
