We Need More Than One Officer

Members of the City Council and City Manager John Nachbar:

A school week has gone by since the boy was struck by the car in front of Farragut Elementary School. I was disappointed to see a single Culver City Police Dept. motor officer writing citations at the intersection of Elenda and Franklin while vehicles continued to run the Stop signs at the other end of the block at Elenda and Farragut Drive.

The officer’s presence apparently was not noticed by the vehicles going through the intersection of Elenda and Farragut Drive.

I would respectfully repeat my request for more Police Dept. resources to put an end to the unsafe behavior of drivers specifically around the CCUSD Quad-Campus area and the residential neighborhoods in general.

Please check http://www.youtube.com/user/jlheyl1952 for visual confirmation of the problems around the CCUSD Quad-Campus area. Similar footage for the El Marino Language School area is available at http://www.youtube.com/user/emparent.

So far, we have been lucky. No children have been killed while going to and from the Quad-Campus area on Farragut Drive.

At http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QD0HkSVQkqo, you will see a school bus roll past the Stop sign at Farragut Drive and Elenda.

I ask you to find the means to put a zero tolerance policy in place around Culver City schools and residential neighborhoods. Every day I watch vehicles speed down my street and ignore the Stops signs at Farragut Drive and Overland, and Farragut Drive and Coombs. I can only surmise that vehicles are doing that all over our city.

Find the solutions for our lack of people resources. Think outside of the box to reduce traffic on Farragut Drive.

I see a perfectly good parking lot being under utilized at the CCUSD Adult School Overland Campus with an existing gate into Farragut Elementary School and the CCUSD Office of Child Development.

I would also point out that there was not a crossing guard at the intersection of Farragut Drive and Coombs at all times when there were children coming and going the last week….

Respectfully Yours
