[Editor’s Note: Two Culver City Democratic Club members protested last night when City Council candidate Mehaul O’Leary showed up at the club’s Endorsement Party but was not allowed to participate because he is not a registered Democrat.]

The office of City Council member is considered non-partisan.
However, the Culver City Democratic Club is being very undemocratic during the current campaign.
Five candidates are registered Democrats and four are non-Democrats for the April 8 election.
As non-partisans, though, all nine should be given an opportunity to speak. The non-Democrats were intentionally left out of last night’s Endorsement Meeting.
Speaking to the Democratic Club does not have to imply endorsement.
Apparently, the leadership of the Democratic Club that non-Democrats have positive ideas that would make some Democratic candidates look bad or foolish.
And Furthermore…

As a Democrat, I am upset and discouraged that the Democratic Club would not give one of the candidates who is undecided or Independent the opportunity to speak at the club.
The national Democratic Party allowed undecideds and Independents to vote in the Democratic primary.
I believe that Democratic Club members lost out by not hearing all of the candidates who are running for Council.
The leaders of this club not only told Mehaul O’Leary that he could not speak, they refused to allow him to distribute his campaign literature.
I believe our citizens and the members of our club lose out when not given all information.
