Re “Karlo: Is Parents Union Headed Down a Potentially Scary Road?

Has Karlo Silbiger, the President of our School Board, become too political for our schools?

As a past President and member of the School Board, I am aware that this position should serve the students of our District.

The parents and community members stand as the students’ advocates in the process.

If this is the case, I am somewhat surprised that Karlo would make such a politically calculated response to the new group of parents. This group of parents from different schools in our District are simply organizing to work together on behalf of their children’s welfare.

This is scary?

Karlo goes on further to mention that the group has formed a political action committee.

He’s scared of that? Excuse me. Aren’t the Classified, Certificated school unions and the Democratic Club PACs?

The two school unions supported his election and gave a substantial amount of money to his campaign. The Democratic Club gave him their endorsement and paid for promotional literature on his behalf.

What was scary about that?

So why can’t parents organize?

It appears that United Parents of Culver City is here to bring balance to this equation. I applaud the parents in taking this bold step to come together to work on behalf of our students. It is about time that the parents became more involved in the political process.

If Board members are doing the right thing for our children, they should not have anything to be scared about. In fact, they should embrace the movement.
