Re “Fighting Words. Why We Are Better – Exceptional vs. ‘Aight’
[Editor’s Note: Two years ago, creative partners/educators Jessica Jacobs and Florina Rodov came to Culver City hoping to open a charter school for professionally employed children and those disaffected with public schools. The School Board rejected their proposal.]
I have thought of Culver City often over the last couple of years, and it is about time to let you know what we have been up to, personally and professionally.
First off….John and I had another son, No. 3. That is a story in and of itself. We had an unassisted homebirth on a farm in Italy.
Somehow, between police, trains and the embassy, 10 days later we ended up in a Croatian hospital.
But in relation to ISPY…
I continued working for the reputable blended learning math education company I was with when ISPY was presented to the CCUSD Board.
But then I was offered a terrific job at a school for at-risk youth in Marin County. This is where I am happily working my ISPY magic with high school students who are otherwise turned off to school.
I am also working as an independent educational consultant for high-profile families and professional youth.
Our big family news this week is that Sage, age 14 — if you remember, he started taking college courses at the age of 11 since the traditional schools weren't working for him – just has been accepted as a junior level transfer student at none other than U.C. Berkeley (who had their lowest acceptance rate this year).
This is without attending middle or high school, just taking online and some in-person college classes while working as a child actor.
As you can see, we are continuing to challenge mainstream education for the sake of the kids for whom it fails.
