Re “Mielke Explains Why Teachers Went with Abrams Rather Than Elmont

I have to take exception to remarks by David Mielke, President of the Teachers Union, that Alan Elmont does not support teachers.

Nothing is further from the truth.

Alan has consistently worked to improve our schools, which, in turn, helps our teachers, and he has the record to prove it.

He was at the formation of the Farragut Fan Club, which was started to provide a computer lab at the school. This expanded to raising funds to cover the salary of a professional to staff that lab as District funds became more scarce.

Later, the Fan Club expanded its focus to raise funds for “the arts” program, as money for that program grew more scarce.

Since his children have moved into the Middle School, he again was at the inception of the Panther Partners (booster club) there.

Having been an active participant in the Community Budget Advisory Committee since its inception in 2003, Alan has consistently supported smaller class sizes, a cap on the numbers of students in the Middle and High School, and bonuses of various amounts to compensate our teachers when long term raises were not available.

If this is not supportive of teachers, I don’t know what is.

Both Mr. Mielke and I have also been on this same committee with Alan. Perhaps Mr. Mielke should try listening to what Alan has said and done, rather than being the barrier to any meaningful dialogue!

Let me state for the record that I am the campaign chair for the Committee to Elect Alan Elmont to the CCUSD School Board 2009. For these and a host of other reasons, I trust the voters will support Alan in the election Nov. 3.
