Finally, Here Are My Views on Threats to Skateboard Park Safety

I have attached the message I was going to read at last night’s City Council meeting. I was unable to attend due to having knee surgery last Thursday.

Mayor Scott Malsin and the Council decided not to have the written comments read into the record.

The Mayor said that if anyone wanted to know the contents of the written comments, they were available at the City Clerk’s office.

No one is going to do that. The Mayor effectively prevented Public Comment from being heard in public.

I am writing so that the public can actually hear my view.

Dear Mayor and Culver City Council:

There have been some tragic celebrity accidents, which have occurred over the years.

They just might have been avoided if they had chosen to follow some simple safety rules…the same safety rules that we teach our children to follow every time they go out to ride a bicycle, to ride a skateboard or even to do some roller-skating.

Let’s take the most recent tragic accident of actress Natasha Richardson.

She was a loving mother, a devoted wife and a wonderful actress. Unfortunately, her life was cut short because of a skiing accident that occurred going down a beginner’s slope where she fell and hit her head on the snow.

If she had been wearing a helmet, her helmet could have cushioned her fall… the circumstances could have turned out so much differently.

The resort were she fell, now is considering requiring helmets.

Our own Culver City Skateboard Park has an unforgiving cement surface in which it doesn’t give like the surface of snow.

I would hate to hear about a tragic accident occurring at our skateboard park.

Please reconsider your decision about a hands-off approach to enforcement of the state mandatory helmet rule.

Everyone participating in any sport where a fall is highly likely to occur, should wear helmets.

Whether they are young, old, male or female, even celebrities, the simple safety rules are meant for everyone, regardless.

Will it take a tragic accident and/or death at the Culver City Skate Park to compel the city to actively enforce their own safety rules?
