Re “Bullet Voting for King Irritates Runnerup Clarke”
Congratulations to the two City Council candidates who received the endorsement of the Culver City Democratic Club on Wednesday night. All four candidates followed the rules that the club provides. This monologue is aimed at those rules, not the candidates who followed them to the letter.
If ever there was a reason to have all dues-paying members of the Democratic Club vote for endorsements rather than just those who happen to show up, I believe this meeting was the poster child of reasons.
The usual turnout of regular dues-paying members was diluted by an influx of new dues-paying members who recently joined, specifically so they could vote in this election. The addition of this group to the voting mix seriously skewered the voting outcome.
Obviously having the entire dues-paying membership able to vote whether or not they attend the endorsement meeting would not stop this practice. It would, however, make the club-allowed practice of stacking the meeting more difficult because more stackers would be needed to get their candidate to the threshold of a 60 percent endorsement.
I am a longtime member of the Culver City Democratic Club. Some may view this rant as sour grapes. I, along with many current and former members of the club view it as an embarrassment.
