Re “Paspalis Gave the ‘Wrong’ Answers to My Questions

Jeffers Dodge's remarks about teenage sons being ready to defend our country reminds me of similar comments I've heard many times made by Dr. Laura on her radio show.

She frequently addresses the unbalanced influence of the maternal vs. fraternal on our young sons. As a woman, of course I understand the instinct to be very protective of our boys. But unfortunately it can be to their detriment. They need a strong male presence to teach them to be men. Men are, and should be, the defenders of their wives, family and country, which is probably the point Mr. Dodge was making.

How is this relevant?

Many of our schools have increasingly discouraged our boys from being boys. They are given medicine to keep them placid rather than let them work out their natural male energy during recess and physical activities. When a 5-year-old boy gets expelled from kindergarten for kissing a 5-year- old girl, we as a society are failing our children.

Members of the School Board are instrumental in making decisions that have enormous impact on our children.

Do we want to put political correctness above nature?

Mr. Dodge did not present his concerns in the most tactful way, but these days, those on both sides of any issue seem frustrated to the point where everyone's on edge, as seen by some of the responses to his letter as well.

He mentioned candidate Kathy Paspalis's association with radical organizations like Acorn, which she listed on Facebook.

Some would consider these issues off-limits because they are part of her personal life.

But the relevance is in the fact that she is running for the School Board. If she wins, she'll have direct influence on our children, through budgeting, curriculum and school activities.

I have no problem with anyone being a single parent or gay.

But I don't think any parent or voter is automatically homophobic or overly old-fashioned to examine and question relevant associations, political/social agendas, or core beliefs of any of our School Board candidates.
