Re “As the Third Contender to Declare, Chardiet Does Indeed”
Although I have been traveling and comparing school systems throughout Europe this summer, I try to keep up with what’s happening in Culver City by reading thefrontpageonline.
I want to welcome Laura Chardiet to the campaign for School Board.
However, I must take issue with her on a basic First Amendment right of free speech!
Ms. Chardiet made a comment regarding Steve Gourley's recent actions,
She says: “Perhaps they should make a rule people will be fined if they don't behave themselves…One hundred dollars per offense, with the money being channeled to the Education Foundation.”
As Voltaire may have put it if he were alive today, “I may not agree with what idiotic statement Mr. Gourley may make. However, I will defend to the death his right to make a buffoon of himself.”
I would ask Ms. Chardiet who would determine who was misbehaving?
Who would impose the fine?
How would it be collected.
That would open a whole new can of worms, wouldn't it?
I therefore submit that there is a difference from the way Ms. Chardiet would act as a “politically correct” School Board member vs. my fervent protection of free speech.
I want our students to think for themselves, to engage in lively open debates rather than being told to act a certain way and regurgitate “politically correct” slop.
