[Editor’s Note: Ken Ruben, Culver City’s best known and most inveterate bus rider, has been monitoring the abrupt interruption of bus service to West L.A. College. Here is the response he received yesterday from a vice president of West.]

Dear Mr. Ruben,

Thank you for expressing your concern regarding the discontinuation of the Culver City bus lines into the College’s campus and how it will affect riders who are trying to get to the college. You stated that you had attended the Culver City City Council meeting and had also read documents regarding the termination of the West L.A. College shuttle bus and the Culver CityBus service into the campus.

As you are aware, one Culver CityBus that serves the college stops at the corner of Jefferson Boulevard and Overland Avenue, adjacent to Denny’s Restaurant. The other bus stop is right at the college entrance, on the corner of Overland and Freshman Drive.

Students, faculty, and staff will only need to walk a short distance from these bus stops to the college. We also have made special arrangements to accommodate students with mobility or health-related issues.

You said that the notice of discontinuation was announced in such a late manner. The decision not to renew the agreement was based on a mutual decision between the college and the Culver City Transportation Dept., and the public announcement was sent out within days after that joint decision was finalized.

I assure you that any decisions made by the college always take into consideration the potential impact on the college’s students, faculty, and staff and the surrounding community.

We thank you and appreciate your concern in this matter.
