Happy New Year to all.
If you haven't already planned your outdoor experience for Saturday morning, please join me for a leisurely bird walk at Kenneth Hahn State Park in the Baldwin Hills, one of L.A. County's hidden gems.
The winter birds have arrived.
We will be looking for golden-crowned, white-crowned and fox sparrows as well as our year around residents.
The winter ducks have arrived at the lake. So we should find more than our usual coots and motley mallards.
The yellow-rumped warblers are everywhere as are the Ruby-crowned Kinglets and Cassin's Kingbirds.
Last year, a Merlin stayed the winter up at the bowl and perhaps has returned. We've seen an Osprey and, of course, our resident Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed Hawks and American Kestrel.
If you don't recognize the names of most of these birds, then this walk is definitely for you. We provide binoculars.
Families with older children (age 7 up) are encouraged to attend. It will undoubtedly be a beautiful morning. Come share it with our local wildlife.
The park entrance is off of La Cienega Boulevard, between Rodeo Road and Stocker Street. After passing the entrance kiosk ($4 parking fee), turn left (leading to the “Olympic Forest”) and park in the first available spaces. Meet at 8 a.m.
If you can't make it this month, the walks are held every third Saturday of the month, September to June. I hope to see you on one of our walks.
I encourage carpooling. Contact me (310.839.5420)if you wish to connect with another participant.
