It should be noted that unlike some of her administrative predecessors, Supt. Patti Jaffe’s choice of her last day on the job will be June 30.
Her choice of the last day of the School District’s 2011-12 fiscal year and not that of July 1 – the first day of the next school year 2012-13 – should not be overlooked by the community.
It is quite different from the choice of our previous superintendent, Dr. Myrna Rivera Coté…24 little hours.
By only “working” that first day of the new fiscal year, the previous superintendent delved deeply into the practice of what is now widely known as “pension spiking.”
She was able to add all the value of that year’s sick and vacation days to her CalSTRS pension calculations and thereby, increase her lifetime pension payout when she retires. All this, just by “working” one day.
But our current superintendent, Patti Jaffe, chose not to do this type of “spiking” of her pension.
In our seemingly avaricious society, it is a nice change to see someone with character do the right thing and not selfishly game the state’s CalSTRS retirement system.
Brava, Patti.
