A Critique of City Hall’s Recycling Vendors

Why is the city using a recycler that is not accountable for what it does with materials picked up?

I was surprised to find that the recycler the city uses resells the computers at its warehouse or sends things off who knows where.

The warehouse guy didn't know who picked up their stuff.

Next time, I will take my stuff to Goodwill over one of these city-sponsored events. Maybe you can do a story on electronic recycling.

Here is a list of reputable recyclers from a website that was mentioned on the “60 Minutes” report on recycling abuse. http://www.e-stewards.org/local_estewards.html and http://www.ban.org

Response from Cathy Vargas, City Hall’s Dept. of Public Works:

“The city has done its due diligence with Bestway and California Recycles, following the collections to the ends of their lives. The companies are doing what needs to be done.”
