Community Health Councils and the Food Policy Roundtable are launching a Campaign for a Healthier South L.A.
The campaign asks South L.A. stakeholders to support innovative land-use policies to promote equitable healthy food access in the pending West Adams – Leimert Park – Baldwin Hills new Community Plan.
The community plan will serve as a blueprint for policies impacting land and the built environment throughout West Adams and as a precedent for the entire South L.A. area’s new Community Plans.
The campaign asks that the community plans include policies to incentivize grocery store development and help protect South L.A. children and families from being disproportionately targeted by an over-concentration of unhealthy fast food establishments.

The L.A. Food Policy Council together with The California Endowment will be holding a training for neighborhood market owners and community groups interested in improving healthy food retail access. The training will take place on Thursday, from 10 at 4, at the Roy A. Anderson Recreation Center in the Expo Center. Admission is free for store owners and nonprofits and $25 for the general public.
The training is designed to provide independent storeowners and their supporters with the skills necessary to transform into successful healthy food enterprises. Workshop sessions will discuss the unmet market demand for healthy food throughout Los Angeles and strategic ways to improve a store’s image and expand grocery services.
