State Asemblymember Holly J. Mitchell (D-Culver City) has a noble reason for establishing Saturday’s Christmas-in-July celebration as an every-summer event.

“At-risk youths deserve summer fun,” says Ms. Mitchell of the affair from 10 until 2 o’clock at Kenny Hahn State Park, 4100 S. La Cienega Blvd.

“They deserve to engage in recreational activities and to hear encouragement to excel.”

“Budget cuts may say ‘the state is Scrooge,’ but Christmas-in-July says ‘We still care.’”

The L.A Sparks’ Sparky, along with Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, will join Ms. Mitchell as Secret Santas as she hosts her annual event, welcoming everybody and giving Christmas prizes to children between 7 and 15 years old who have been nominated by neighboring schools and their parents.

The second annual Christmas-in-July is a free carnival of activities focusing on fun and fitness, health, education and literacy. There will be giveaways and Christmas gifts for low-income families from across the 47th Assembly District
