Dateline Dayton — Again guns are in the news. This week, it was Detroit police officers who were killed in their own precinct.

True, there always have been shootings.

I remember well the oldtime Western movies at the theatre, and then on television. Yes, I even had a cap gun and holster.

Did I want out go out and kill someone just because I saw it in the movies or on television? No!

I’m going out on a limb. I wonder if all the shootings we are experiencing could be due to our lack of respect for life.

Abortion is well accepted in our society. Soon, I believe, we will be to the point where ending the life of the ill will become accepted practice.

Today’s children are being raised in a society that finds ending life, especially of the unborn, common. The only difference is guns are not being used. Therefore, it does not make the nightly news.

Just the other day I was reading a strange posting on one of my collecting sites. A gentleman was talking about ending his life if he knew for sure he would be with his dog, who had just died. This is sad.

I feel badly that his 15-year-old dog died. Life goes on, though. We must make the best of a situation.

In my essay last week, I made the statement that no one said life would be easy. That is true. God gives us difficult tests. But with faith, we can overcome what life deals us, remembering He does not give us more than we are capable of handling.

Some People’s Children

Continuing on my soap box – Sunday night, after working a flea market for the weekend, I met my wife and her brother at a well-know local pizza establishment.

The pizza is always good, and it was this time. But the number of kids running through the store and playing in the restrooms was out of control. Don’t get me wrong. Kids should be able to enjoy themselves, just not at the expense of other patrons. If this pizza establishment specialized in kids’ parties that would be one thing. It isn’t, though.

Do I blame the kids for the way they were carrying on? No. The parents were lax in their responsibility.

On one occasion a female employee had to remove young boys from the women’s restroom. Some parents today are just downright lazy. They will not supervise their children no matter where they are. .

My brother-in-law walks with a cane, due to having broken his hip, and he has poor eyesight. It was necessary for me to walk him to the restroom so none of the kids would run into him. The same was true for the return trip.

I’m still of the belief that having children should require a license so that dumb parents (using the term loosely) could be instructed on how to raise and care for their children.

The number of children being killed by individuals who are supposed to be caring for them and providing love is alarming.
