Storytelling

Three years ago, he told the newspaper:

“People call Culver City Mayberry because you hear things for the second, third and fourth times. If you tell something to two people, it becomes true. Not only that, when it comes back to you, the rumor is worse than when it started. It’s really like that old game of Telephone.”

An attorney of impressire professional stature, Mr. Gourley is a heavily involved city official of long standing and a former director of the state Dept. of Motor Vehicles, Mr. Gourley’s resume elevates and intensifies the competition.

Not Yet, He Says

He downplayed the significance of his actions weeks before the filing deadline.

“I have merely asked to look at papers to see what is involved in being a candidate for the School Board,” Mr. Gourley told the newspaper this morning.

It is believed that he would be the first lawyer to serve on the School Board since Alvin Weisman, father of Planning Commissioner Andy Weisman, in the 1960s and early ‘70s.

Rest of the Field

Mr. Gourley pointed out he has until Aug. 10 to make his decision on running.

Second-time candidate Roger Maxwell and fifth-time contender Michael Eskridge also are in the race for seats being vacated by Stew Bubar and Board President Marla Wolkowitz.
