Re “A Culver City Officer Treated Me Despicably. He Is a Jerk.”

Last Friday, the newspaper published a 2,000-word report from a resident named Charles Fernandez, who claimed in colorful detail, that the Culver City Police Dept., one cop in particular, mistreated him spectacularly in a late-night incident at his home.

Mr. Fernandez has exchanged correspondence with the Police Dept. since the Nov. 3 dustup.

For many years, trailing back to the previous century, the Police Dept. has had the reputation for being non-responsive or arrogantly responsive to citizen complaints.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new true tail to pin on that donkey this afternoon.

Once again, the department has responded with an exasperatingly impersonal Olympian attitude, reminiscent of the Ted Cooke days.

When the newspaper sought a response to the Fernandez complaint, the Police Dept., plainly preoccupied with more important chores, dispatched its spokesman, Lt. Ron Iizuka, to the computer. He was told to send a formful 7-sentence “explanation” “detailing” how we busy police departments react to serious citizen complaints.

That is an embarrassment in a small town where crime is not supposed to fill a thimble.

Being a sport, let’s give them one more day to issue a meaningful comment on Mr. Fernandez’s alleged manhandling.
