Fiscal Folly

A furlough day, by definition, is a mutually agreed upon uncompensated, non-work day.

In the school year 2010-11, Culver City Unified School District employees agreed to take five furlough days, and to take four days in the following year. This was necessary because of the continued state cuts and deferral in education funding.

Surprise!

At last night’s School Board meeting, the First Interim budget report for 2012-13 was presented to the Board. The public found out that the District has budgeted to reimburse teachers for one of those past furlough days.

Despite the fact that projections show that the District will continue to deficit spend over $2.5M annually and into the forseeable future, our District wants to pay some of its employees for not working.

This is sheer fiscal folly.

What Were They Thinking?

Did our elected representatives really agree to pay teachers over $100,000 for not working?

A Vote of No-Confidence

These kinds of unsound, fiscal decisions make me lose confidence in the current Board's ability to handle District funds and begin to question its stewardship over our District.
