Thoughts on the eve of Saturday’s 12 noon community meeting at West L.A. College, called by the County Regional Planning Commission to hear testimony on drilling plans by Plains, Exploration & Production Co. in the Baldwin Hills oil field:
Do you know where the terrorists all over the world, including right here in Culver City, obtain their funding?
Are you concerned about terrorists using a dirty bomb in the Los Angeles Basin? http://www.newsletterscience.com/marex
The result — immediate nausea and vomiting, fever, hair loss, diarrhea and death after about 7 days. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health
Did you know relieving natural pressure caused by oil deposits can reduce earthquakes and oil seepage pollution? http://www.ia.ucsb.edu
Did you know there are 500,000 detectable earthquakes in the world each year? How are we going to differentiate?
How long do you want to wait for redundant studies while we enrich our enemies in the Middle East?
When was the last time there were clusters of cancer caused by oil drilling?
Do we need to delay the exploration of domestic oil just to enhance our already existing Emergency Response Plan?
In the very rare event of an oil-drilling earthquake that does damage to your property why should the taxpayers compensate you for damage? Why not the oil company doing the drilling? After all, they already carry surety bond and other types of insurance for industrial accidents. When was the last time there was an oil drilling accident that caused widespread damage to personal property?
This may sound like fear mongering, but so did the boy who cried wolf about domestic oil drilling in our community.
I, for one, am impressed with the safety record of the oil industry. And while we are talking about energy, I am in favor of building a nuclear power plant right next to the one at UCLA.
I am not impressed with the high oil prices advocated by some that amount to a tax on the poor and the middle class.
