Re “One for You, Nineteen for Me”
Curiously, the almost $200K in the onetime furlough, now deferral, day, reimbursement to teachers was not exactly voted on or even directly approved by our local School Board. Oh, Board members passed it, all right. As in, they passed the buck. It seems our School Board members, elected by our community to make local School District decisions, thought this issue was too hot for them to handle.
…We Didn’t Pass It, You Did
Since a majority on this Board might be running for re-election in November, I can only guess that these members didn't want to pay the political price for either casting a vote paying employees for not working or be seen voting against it, thereby, letting down and upsetting their fellow educators. So, instead, they let someone else decide this local issue for them –and that someone was the California electorate.
Local Decision-making?
Our Board decided it would shirk its elected responsibilities and pass off this local decision-making responsibility to the voters of California, half of whom probably did not even know that the Culver City Unified School District even existed. And 99.9% probably weren’t aware that they were actually voting on and settling a local bargaining issue.
I am not really sure that what our Board did in passing the buck was even legal.
