Dateline Dayton – Last Friday evening we attended our granddaughter Julia's softball game.  They lost, but they had a second game we didn’t stay for, and they won that time.

Saturday morning we were again at a ball diamond, this time for our grandniece, Ava, an 8:30 game at Kettering Field in North Dayton.

Ava lives over in Columbus, and she plays in a traveling league.  Her team was playing here for two days. Sunday’s game started at the more reasonable hour of 12 noon.

After they lost badly in 36 minutes, we went over to the market and then the fairgrounds where there was an outdoors flea market.

Although I sold most of my collection when we moved to the condo, I still enjoy looking.  If I were collecting mugs, I would have purchased a few.  As it turned out, Pauline made a $1 purchase, and that was the extent of our buying.

Leaving the fairgrounds, we headed for Waynesville, where I made contact with Antique John.  He was interested in my National Cash Register items, and he purchased all of them.  We were able to work out a trade, since Pauline found an item of interest in his store.

Saturday evening we attended the Dragons game. Can you guess that they, too, lost.  I have said before, it's always fun to attend a Dragons game, win or lose.

Sunday, Father's Day, we started with church followed by breakfast.  Shortly after arriving home, our son Jon and his two girls arrived.  He was interested in the flat stones I had left over from a patio project. We loaded them into my van, which he wanted to borrow for a project.

Bill and his family, along with Lisa and her family arrived later in the afternoon for a cookout.  Bill manned the grill and he also cut the grass in the patio area.  Chris arrived after he got off work, a little after 6.  Darlene, who lives in Michigan, called to wish me Happy Father’s Day.

Now for my two cents on current news:

  • A 56-year-old man from Miamisburg, south of Dayton, is being detained in North Korea.  First, what is a 56-year-old street maintenance worker, with a Russian wife and three young children, doing in North Korea? He allegedly left a bible in his hotel room, the cause of the problem.  He was in North Korea with a tour group, but I have never heard what kind of group.  Not much is being said to avoid additional problems in obtaining his release.
  • Our President is sending troops back to Iraq.  Personally, I thought pulling the troops from Iraq was dumb. Our job was nowhere near being completed.  The decision did help President Obama to be re-elected. Now we will be paying the price for another of his bad decisions.
  • Bowe Bergahl still is in the news. His release was just another bad decision by our leader.  From all accounts, he is a deserter. He does not deserve the favorable press he is getting.  So now we have a group of bad guys back in position to cause us grief.  What a deal.
  • Pete Rose managed a baseball team on Monday night.  He was able to do so because the team was not affiliated with major league baseball.  Pete deserves his ban from baseball, but he should be in the Hall of Fame.
