Once again California voters have turned away another initiative backed by an ultra-rich family.
This time it was the Munger family-backed Prop. 38. By using our state’s initiative process, bypassing the Legislature and going directly to the voters, these self-proclaimed politicos sidestepped our state officials, causing them to lose out in the political process. What Big Daddy, Jesse Unruh, the late Speaker of the Assembly in the 1960s, so shrewdly called the “mother’s milk” of politics: Money. And today, there's lots of it floating around Sacramento.
I am sure our state politicians would rather have had some of the millions spent on Prop. 38 spread through the Legislature, so they, too, could have gotten their fair-share of the political pie.
Brother, Can You Spare a Million?
But how much is $22M to a billionaire family? To you and me, it still seems like a helluva lot of money. To these ultra-rich folks, it’s like us average Joes spending $1100 at a close-out sale for an older model, big screen TV. It's not going to break the bank.
Once again, Californians turned away from these ultra-rich self-proclaimed legislators and told them to spend their money on something better and stop trying to influence voters.
