Culver City High’s national champions
It is official: Culver City is the 2013 National High School Sports Medicine Grand Champion.
The American Academic Competition Institute recently released the results of the second annual National High School Sports Medicine Championships that took place in May.
Their goal is to give students from across the nation an opportunity to excel in their chosen areas of study through online competition and testing.
Therefore, the Academic Competition Institute developed the online National High School Sports Medicine Championships to help test and celebrate high school students’ Sports Medicine/Athletic Training knowledge. Four hundred students from 28 high schools across seven states competed in this year’s national championships after qualifying from a field of 2,000 students from 190 high schools at the regional level.
Each team consisted of between eight and 15 students with the top eight scores averaged to create the Team Average. Schools were separated into one of three divisions by the number of students enrolled at their school. The exam consisted of 253 questions in three sections administered over a two-hour time block at each school. Topics included: first aid and CPR, emergency procedures, medical terminology, legal issues, physiology, and anatomy/evaluation techniques for the upper leg and knee.
The Culver City High School Sports Medicine students performed extremely well at the national level, earning the title of National Champion of the Cramer (Large Schools) Division.
In addition to first place in the Large Schools Division, Culver City High scored the highest overall amongst schools from all divisions, naming Culver City High School the 2013 Grand Champions. Senior Alex Munoz took second place, with nine other Centaurs earning All-American honors for placing in the top 25. For his performance, Alex earned a $250 college scholarship. Next year Alex will be attending Cal State Monterey Bay and majoring in Sports Medicine.
The students are part of the Culver City High School Regional Occupational Program under my direction, and I am a Certified Athletic Trainer.
Many of my students have decided to continue their education and pursue careers in the health field. As a teacher, it is nice to know that you are having a positive influence on students who may one day save the life of someone else.
Culver City’s first place finish in the National High School Sports Medicine Championship followed a first-place finish in the California state competition held earlier this year at St. Francis High School.
