Re “Activist Heyl Calls for More Police Presence, and Enforcement, Around School Campus

I wanted to comment on John Heyl‘s request last week for more of a police presence around Culver City High School.

It’s probably not going to happen anytime soon, Mr. Heyl, with the current budget shortfall.

The city will continue to pay $2.5 million a year for a red light camera program that loses money every year.

The Police Dept. will continue to spend 4.5 million a year on unnecessary positions that have nothing to do with public safety or putting police officers on the street.

These needless positions have been around for 20 years, and the red light program has been here for eight years.

That money could have paid for an additional 20 police officers who could have been patrolling the streets of Culver City.

And if the city did not need these police officers, that is $100 million they sure could use today.

The new budget talks start this week, and the city soon will see if things are going to change or stay the same.

Culver City has a new City Manager and a new City Council.

But I am apprehensive, Mr. Heyl. I think you will see the same results.
