I received a call recently from a young lady I last saw four years ago to help her to resolve a fear of flying and panic/anxiety attacks. It took seven sessions.
Her problem was so thoroughly resolved that when her flight crash-landed in a football field in Turkey, she remained calm. In fact, although a little shaken by what had happened she maintained her positive feelings toward flying.
Five years ago, I spoke with Whoopi Goldberg about her fear of flying. She would not fly anywhere, preferring to travel across country in a mobile home. Her fear stemmed from witnessing two planes crashing near her home. She had seen a hypnotist and a psychiatrist to no avail. She even learned how to fly, but her fear remains. She did not give me to opportunity to hypnotize her. She wants to stay as she is.
The young woman I mentioned at the beginning came back because she had a baby six weeks earlier, and her old anxiety was coming back. She felt disconnected, anxious, irritable.
When we talked about her crisis, her problem became clear. Not surprisingly for a new mom, she was not sleeping well. Her rest was continually interrupted. She had contracted stomach flu, and she was not eating well.
Poor eating contributed heavily to her anxiety.
Our brains are fed by what we eat. When we consume a lot of carbohydrates, we spike our blood sugar levels. We feel clear and logical when we eat. When we do not eat, lightheadedness dogs us. We are angry, sweaty, irritable, detached from the world.
Unfortunately eating carbohydrates creates large blood sugar level swings. The key is to ensure adequate amounts of protein every two hours. When incorrectly nourished, the brain becomes hyper vigilant and devises a scenario so the body will produce it. An adrenaline rush follows. The brain gets what it needs but continues to deplete a drained blood sugar level.
For a first-time mom, anxiety was normal.
When she resumed eating properly, small amounts of protein every two hours, she became stronger. Anxiety disappeared.
Back to her old self, she followed her diet regimen, relaxed, nagging anxieties melted.
She had no reason to feel panicked.
