In Brentwood, they have a tough time coordinating.

For years, the Brentwood Community Council never had an American Flag present or recited the Pledge of Allegiance at its monthly meetings, even though the Council members regularly discussed land use at the National Veterans Home where Veterans were healing from their Military injuries while defending the American Flag.

Look around. Not a flag in sight.

Eight Brentwood Boy Scouts, with Larry Kegel, loyally doing their duty

The Brentwood Community Council is a supporter of Veterans Park Conservancy, not a Veterans organization but a homeowner group that has a rent-free, 30-year lease for 16 acres of Veterans’ property to build a public community park.

In January, Vietnam Veterans of America, representing chapters from Pasadena, Long Beach, South Bay and Riverside, showed up and presented the BCC with the American Flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance, a first!

At the February meeting, the Flag was present but no Pledge was recited. This was brought to BCC's attention.

Larry Kegel, Vietnam War Veteran and a member of the Old Veterans Guard, drove from Santa Clarita to make sure the Pledge was recited prior to the meeting. Otherwise, he was prepared to stand up and request that all in attendance follow him in reciting the Pledge.

For last night's monthly meeting, the BCC invited the Brentwood Boy Scouts to present the Flag, and we salute them.

The Boy Scouts did an outstanding job of presenting the Flag and leading the Council and attendees with the Pledge. They even had a Bugler. Let us hope that the BCC continues to show the same respect in presenting the Flag and reciting the Pledge. at ALL future meetings.

Nancy Freedman, chair of the Brentwood Community Council CC and board member of the Veterans Park Conservancy, questioned me if I was a member of the press, and with what authority I was taking pictures. She told me to identify myself.

However, a number of people were present with cameras. None was asked to identify himself.

Thanks to Vietnam Veterans of America and the Boy Scouts of America for establishing the presence of the American Flag and the Pledge of Allegiance at the Brentwood Community Council.

God Bless America and The Veterans Revolution!
