[Editor’s Note: This is the eighth in a daily series of Janet Hoult poems from “Body Parts,” a collection of poetry about aging.]
What’s That, What Did You Say?
What’s that, what did you say?
I really haven’t got all day
Just speak up now, have no fear,
Repeat it dear, I couldn’t hear
I’ll put my hand behind my ear
so that I can better hear
Words and phrases I can’t make out
You really don’t have to shout
Why can’t you speak so I can hear?
I’ll check my hearing aids to see
if it’s them and not just me
I’ll turn them up so I can hear
in all directions…oh, my dear!
The words come in so loud and clear
I have a headache now, I fear.
I’ll turn them off, they’ve passed the test
Perhaps that’s best, give them a rest
Aaah….silence is golden.
