[Editor’s Note: Ms. Wisnosky Stehlin is a founding officer of United Parents of Culver City.]

We at United Parents of Culver City are working on the details of the School Safety Forum two weeks from tonight with the School District and the City of Culver City.

Together, we hope that this unique, much needed forum will inspire future forums of its kind.

Our objective: We seek to achieve a meaningful dialogue between parents, the community, the District and the city about school safety. We are all stakeholders in keeping our children safe.
This is a wonderful opportunity to bring people together to discuss this important topic.

  • The School Safety Forum will take place at the Vets Auditorium on Wednesday, Jan. 23, from 7 o’clock to 8:30.
  • Participants include Supt. Dave LaRose, Culver City Police Chief Don Pedersen, and others. Mayor Andy Weissman and School Board President Kathy Paspalis. Other City Council and School Board members will be in attendance.
  • The forum will be moderated by UPCC parent member Laura Jane Kessner, who is chairperson of the UPCC Student Well-Being team.
  • We are asking for members of the public to let us know what questions and topics are important to them. There is a link on the UPCC website or the public can submit questions via email: contact@UnitedParentsCulverCity.com. We will forward those questions and topics to our moderator, as well as to Supt. LaRose and the police chief in advance.
  • Parents and community members will also have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A during the safety forum.
  • RSVP to this free event (just so we can get an idea of how many people we expect for planning purposes) here: http://www.UnitedParentsCulverCity.com/safety
    RSVPs are not required.

Examples of questions that have already been submitted include:

  • How does our School District handle emergencies?
  • In the wake of recent tragedies, what have the District and the police done so far regarding school security?
  • Are we adequately controlling access to our campuses? How?
  • How can we work together to make our schools safer?
  • How are we addressing mental health issues in our student population?
  • Are mental health issues tied to safety? If so, what can we do about it?
  • What measures will – or should – be taken to prepare for post traumatic stress in the event of an emergency – earthquake, terrorism or other?
  • What are the available resources to students and families?
  • What is the anti-bullying campaign? Is it working?
