Farragut Elementary School students have critiqued and selected their best artwork to display in the 500-piece gallery art show called “Artworks!” from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, in the Helms Bakery Complex at 8723 Washington Blvd.

An additional 100 pieces of professional art from local artists also will be on display as part of a silent and live auction that will include gift certificates from local businesses.
The Artworks! adults-only gallery show is a fun evening of art, a live and silent auction, cocktails, jazz and hors d’oeuvres.
It is widely attended, not only by parents but also by arts supporters, city officials and the community.
The company Walter Marks, Inc., has provided the space at the Helms Bakery Complex.
Admission is $10 per person.
Always popular is a cocktail bar provided by City Councilman Mehaul O’Leary of Joxer Daly’s Irish pub, complete with drink specials such as “Picasso’s Plunge,” hors d’oeuvres by Caffe Roberto, an extraordinary cheese display by Surfas, and desserts by Hotcakes Bakes.
Flowers will be provided by Culver Center Flowers, and musical entertainment by Mr. Pascoe’s Jazz Trio.
There also will be a silent and live auction of professional art at affordable prices.
Childcare is available for $20 per child at the nearby Josephson Academy of Gymnastics with pre-registration for school-aged students only.
And Then It’s Everybody’s Turn
The following day, Sunday, April 26, will be “Community Art Day” with free arts and crafts activities for all ages. The free art exhibit is open from 10 to 1 on Sunday for general viewing by children, families and the public.
Artworks! co-chair Bonnie Wacker said that a Tinker Bell animation cell by Warner Brothers inker Martha Sigall, which sold for $900, was last year’s hottest item.
This year, Ms. Sigall is donating another cell of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck.
She is giving the winner a tour of her collection.
“We anticipate that our most popular items this year will be a BMW bike cruiser and Sony Premiere tickets,” Ms. Wacker said
Kathleen McKernin, also a co-chair of the event, said that “we are adding a cocktail lounge area complete with living room from the Sony Studios props department and Omega Cinema Props.
Why Artworks Is Critical
“Our featured area this year will be our new and expanded Artworks! Bazaar area with jewelry, hand-knit American Girl hat and scarf sets, handmade stationery, organic jam and over-the-top terrific boutique items from professional crafters, as well as our ‘Kids Boutique’ area with handprinted towels, bags, decoupage glassware and printed stationery all made by Farragut students.”
More than $17,000 was raised last year to support the arts at Farragut Elementary School. Funds went to pay for an art teacher’s salary and provided all the necessary art supplies to fund the entire program for the year.
Without this fundraiser, the art program at Farragut would not exist, according to school officials. All proceeds from the Artworks! event will go to the Farragut Fan Club, the sponsoring organization for the art program at Farragut.
“Our theme this year is ‘Community,’” said Farragut Principal Barbara Brown.
“It’s a coming together of our parents, students’ art creations and the community to celebrate the arts. Farragut is an ‘arts and technology focus’ school.
“We are not only able to give our students classes in art, but music appreciation classes as well. We enjoy leading the way in providing an arts education for every student.”
