Sometimes you can stand at a bus stop for hours, tapping every toe separately, while waiting for wheels to arrive and carry you to your destination.
It happened last night, and this morning, in Council Chambers.
For angry months, there has been a three-cornered dispute — among neighbors, City Hall and West Los Angeles College officials — over Culver CityBus lines entering and crossing West’s spacious campus, from early morning to late night.
Three months ago, in response to noise complaints from neighbors, the bus schedule was sharply trimmed, and once again it was modified this month for West’s summer term.
The college, evidently without brimming enthusiasm, endorsed the schedule produced by Transportation Director Art Ida’s department, but it required City Council approval to make formalize the latest change.
The wait at last night’s meeting called for major patience.
The lengthy, meandering meeting was almost four hours old, and 19 speakers, mostly from the college, displaying impressive staying power, had their say. They asked the Council not to further shrink the summer or regular school year schedules.
Around midnight, with all in Chambers wearied, the Council unanimously approved the reduced summer and school-year bus plans.
