In keeping with one of my campaign promises last fall when I was running for the School Board, I want to make certain that the public is kept abreast of everything that is going on with our schools.

Additionally, not only do I want the public to be informed, but I would also like the public’s input as to what they believe we should be doing as elected officials.
The School District (along with probably 99% of the districts across our state) are in a situation where we are going to have to make some cuts to the budget.

On Tuesday evening at the School Board meeting, at 7 o’clock, at District headquarters on Irving Place, the Community Budget Advisory Committee is going to make a presentation to the Board regarding its recommendations for cuts.

The public, of course, is invited and welcome to attend that meeting. Indeed, the more public input we have, the better.

Additionally, I am pleased to announce that there will be a very informal discussion on Tuesday, Feb. 19, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 at the Lin Howe School Cafeteria.

This is not going to be a School Board meeting.

Instead, we have scheduled this informal discussion so that the public has an additional opportunity to speak to the Supt. Dr. Myrna Rivera Cote and two members of the School Board (more than two would be a violation of the Brown Act).

This is not designed as a question/answer- type meeting. Instead, it is an attempt to solicit input from the community as to their thoughts, feelings, ideas, etc. with respect to the budget and any potential actions on the budget.

Here is a copy of the official press release announcing the meeting:

The School District will discuss budget cuts and solicit input from the community as the District prepares its budget revisions in light of the recent mid-year state budget cuts.

Representatives from the School Board and the District will discuss proposed cuts at a Community Information Night, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19, in the cafetorium at
Linwood E. Howe Elementary School, 4100 Irving Pl.

“This is an important opportunity for the community to weigh in on what items are priorities for them as the Board considers revisions to our 2007-2008 budget and develops plans for our 2008-2009 budget,” said Supt. Myrna Rivera Coté.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend the meeting, and no reservations are necessary.

The Board welcomes public input and opinions.

For information regarding the meeting, please call the Superintendent’s Office, 310.842.4220, ext. 4221.
