Vice Mayor O’Leary

One month before he is expected to crown his career on the City Council by returning to the rotating mayor’s chair, imperiled Vice Mayor Mehaul O’Leary hopes Culver City’s term limits law is rescinded.

“The job is not done,” he said.”“I have already initiated a discussion about term limits. It is coming back to us as a Charter review.”

Striking an end-of-patience stance, Mr. O’Leary said he had no idea why there has been a delay in advancing the sometimes-disputed topic to the full Council.

“Apparently there is no hurry,” he said, noting the City Council is not empowered to flip term limits.

“It has to be a vote of the people.”

The vice mayor predicted that term limits will be on next April’s City Council election ballot.

“This is a bad idea,” Mr. O’Leary said. “I would hate to think that the public is going to be voting for candidates for the City Council based on the candidates’ opinion regarding whether term limits should or should not be extended.”

The problem with that formulation is that “candidates will be forced to take sides on an issue not relevant to the election.”
