Re “‘You Made $17,000? Well. Not Exactly’”
Summer Music Festival producer Gary Mandell said that when the community’s oldest newspaper erroneously reported he was earning $17,000 this season for six weeks’ work, a correction was required for two reasons.
“It was important not only for me – some people missed the point,” he said, “it was important for the City Council,” his employer.
“Somebody could say ‘Why are you paying this guy $17,000 to sit there for two hours on six Thursdays in the summer?’
“It is important for the city to know,” Mr. Mandell said, “where their money is going. It also makes it difficult for me to fundraise and justify what I am telling sponsors, like ‘Hey, we need the money to do the festival’ when Gary Mandell is making $17,000 for six weeks of work.”
Mr. Mandell, doing the recruiting himself, has convinced a record lineup of sponsors to assign their business names to publicity for Culver City’s Boulevard Music Summer Festival, which opened last night.
With French flavoring, the festival resumes next Thursday at 7 in the Courtyard of City Hall.
