If you think City Councilman Andy Weissman is not popular in this town, consider:

Nearly 50 years after her mysterious death, Marilyn Monroe got mostly dressed and sashayed about the grounds of the Culver Studios on Saturday night as a sort of friendly rival attraction at Mr. Weissman’s enormously popular fundraiser.

They posed together, as you can plainly see. No one had to write down who was on the right, who on the left.

Crowds came by the hundreds to party under a gigantic white tent that matched Ms. Monroe’s virginal hue – the leadership of the community, the middle tier and the southern tier of residents who came to honor the young patriarch of the City Council. Perhaps the turnout was not so surprising because Mr. Weissman and his unique personality have been serving Culver City since the ‘80s, and now they are running for a second term in the April 10 election.

By adroitly interlacing a wicked but always harmless sense of humor with a serious, mature mien, he has been a leader everywhere he has gone,

A gentle calming force, whether he was in his 30s or now in his early 60s, he is a stabilizing, unflappable fatherly figure.

They Speak Out

“I have known Andy for 30 years,” says businessman Allan Goldman. “He is my attorney. He is the best Councilman I have seen since I have been around. His demeanor and his sincerity are impressive. He treats everyone with respect, whether you agree with him or not.

“He is gentleman, too, and he always seems to know what is best for the city.”

Mr. Goldman says that Mr. Weissman’s firmly level, always-under-control demeanor distinguishes him from his colleagues. “He listens. He pays attention. When he speaks, he doesn’t talk from the hip. He speaks with knowledge. He exemplifies professionalism on the job.”

One of Mr. Weissman’s most intimate friends is fellow attorney Phil Tangalakis. Their fathers practiced law in this town, and they went to Culver City High School at the same time although they didn’t know each other then. By now, their pal-ship spans more than 30 years.

Mr. Tangalakis wore a gleam in one eye when he sized up his friend. “You see, Andy is one of the premier attorneys in town,” he said. “So long as he is a Councilman, he has to declare a conflict in certain cases and the business comes over to my office.”
