Re “Most Unusual Interfaith Gathering Ever in Culver City”

When the police chief of Culver City was invited to Saturday morning’s experimental gathering of Christians and Muslims at the King Fahad Mosque, he did not have a readymade topic in a computer file.

“I am actually struggling a little with the subject,” Mr. Bixby said late this morning.

“I have been invited to the mosque a couple of times. It always was last-minute, and I never could attend.

“This time I was contacted well in advance by Mr. (Mohammed) Khan. “I said ‘Yeah, sure,’ as I would do for anybody who asked me. They asked if I would say a few words. I was not sure what they meant by that.

“I told Mr. Khan I would be happy to give a little background on me and an overview of the department.

“My understanding is that I will have about five minutes. I am not quite sure, though, of anything more than that.”

Two days out, the first-year chief is perplexed. “I never have been to the mosque, and I don’t know if what I plan to say will fit into the program,” Mr. Bixby said.
