[Editor’s Note: An update from the President of the Teachers Union to his members.]
Friends —
If the Culver City Unified School District wants to lay off permanent employees, they need to notify us by March 15.
As a result, districts come up with a cut list ahead of that date so employees can be notified in a timely fashion.
Districts generally send out more of these notices than they will need to give themselves maximum flexibilty in the process.
Having said that, the news that CCSUD tonight is considering a reduction in 20 certificated positions is disturbing. Here's the tentative list:
8 Elementary teachers
2 Spanish Immersion elementary teachers
1 Japanese Immersion elementary teacher
1.2 High school English teachers
2 HS Math teachers
8 HS Spanish teacher
4 HS Japanese teacher
6 HS Health teacher
1.4 HS Social studies teachers
2 HS AVID teachers
2 HS Technology teachers
1 HS Assistant Principal
1 HS Counselor
We will be there at tonight’s 6:30 Board meeting to speak against these possible cuts.
What is particularly distrurbing, here, is that CCUSD has not done a real retirement incentive analysis even though they agreed to do it in last year's settlement.
Seventy-seven teachers are 55 years of age or older. Many could be persuaded to retire with an adequate incentive. Public agencies around the state do this first — and then make cuts.
Another concern is that this Board is operating without input from the Community Budget Advisory Committee.
In previous years, CBAC generated a prioritized list of cuts that was forwarded on to the Board. It was advisory only. But it did reflect the concerns of the community. This Board is operating without that input.
We'll keep you posted. Dave
