Re “Putting the School District on a Diet”
With his spotlight campaign fundraiser — called a Bowling Fun(d)raiser — coming up at 6:30 Saturday evening at the Gardena Bowl, School Board President Scott Zeidman said this afternoon that “’way too much money is spent on campaigns.
“I heard an estimate from one camp they were trying to raise $20,000.
“For what?” asked the favorite in a five-cornered race for two Board seats, his and Steve Gourley’s.
Mr. Zeidman began to list rudimentary expenses:
“Signs cost $1500. Flyers cost about $1,000. Various advertisements for a few hundred dollars here and there, and the ballot statement is about twelve hundred bucks.
“So you are looking at, not counting a mailer, five grand.
“I am not sure where $20,000 would go unless you are going to start mailing to everybody. I would much rather go door-to-door, knock on as many doors as I can, and personally deliver the flyers.”
Trying to be reasonable, Mr. Zeidman said that “even with a mailer and everything else, you can do a campaign for seven grand.
“The goal for our bowling fundraiser Saturday night is to have families to come out and bowl, eat some tacos and have a really good time. If we raise some money, great.”
